For the eighth year running Unilever has topped the food and beverage sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Indexes (DJSI World).

The DJSI Indexes are compiled by SAM, a Swiss financial services company specialising in sustainable investment. Its research identifies the most sustainable companies in the Dow Jones World and European STOXX indexes. The top 10% of the largest companies in these leading stock market indices are selected for the DJSI.

The indexes are increasingly viewed by companies as an external, objective indicator of their progress – and that of competitors – in improving social and environmental performance.

The annual review is based on a thorough assessment of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, accounting for issues such as corporate governance, climate change, supply chain standards and labour practices.

In a two-page report showing Unilever's sustainability performance in the food industry, SAM researchers mentioned Unilever's role in the development of sustainable palm oil criteria, along with its success in strengthening supplier relationships and communicating its Business Partner Code. The report also highlighted Unilever's joint research with Oxfam exploring the local economic impacts of Unilever's operations in Indonesia.

Last year SAM recognised our framework for measuring product prices in emerging markets as a percentage of the local minimum daily wage, our Nutrition Enhancement Programme, and work with partners in the supply chain.
