Making everyday life richer
Bertolli is the world's leading olive oil brand and is committed to consistently producing high quality, authentic Italian foodstuffs. Our products offer consumers everywhere the pleasure and enjoyment of preparing and eating good food: experiences that are essentially simple, pure, naturally good and – as the Italians have always known - make everyday life richer.
Byword for Mediterranean culture
Bertolli's most famous product is its extra virgin olive oil, a food rich in history and tradition and a byword for Mediterranean culture. It's also particularly rich in unsaturated fatty acids, which your body needs to be healthy, but cannot make itself.
Italian heritage
Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina began selling the product in 1865 when they opened a small shop beneath their home in the Italian town of Lucca in the heart of Tuscany. Since then the company has expanded rapidly and now four varieties of extra virgin olive oil and two types of olive oil are produced at Bertolli’s Inveruno site near Milan – the biggest facility of its kind in the world.
Wide choice
But Bertolli is much more than just olive oil, despite the many different varieties. True to our original vocation, we have developed a wide range of culinary products based on Italian home cooking and the healthy Mediterranean lifestyle. Pasta sauces, frozen meals and olive oil-rich margarine are just some of the foodstuffs now available to consumers.
Did you know?
It takes a long delicate production process to transform olives into the precious green liquid, used every day in salads and cooking. A series of procedures have to be followed including:
- Harvesting – Harvesting begins between November and January when the olives are almost ripe.
- Crushing – The shorter the time between harvesting and pressing of the olives, the better.
- Kneading – The oily paste is delicately kneaded to allow tiny droplets to blend into larger drops and to expel the water contained in them.
- Extraction – The final stage in the process is separation of oil from residues, called marc.
- Storage – Olive oil must be preserved carefully to keep its quality intact. It’s kept in non-porous stainless steel containers to prevent batches from contaminating one another.
