Fashion is fickle, but we've all followed it at some point, from frilly bell bottoms to velvet hot pants. And our hair is certainly no different.

Roller hairOur poor hair

We submit our hair to a whole set of harsh treatments in the name of fashion. Velcro rollers for some extra bounce. Poker hot straightneners for that chic look. Maybe a few coloured highlights to add a bit of sparkle. Not to mention the washing, brushing and drying we do most days.

Then there's a whole history of hairstyle trends over the years. In the 1990s we all craved highlights and rod-straight hair. For that our hair had to endure lightening treatments followed by sizzling hair irons.

Back in the 1980s the fashion rule for hair was simple: the bigger, the better. For many of us that meant a trip to the hairdressers for any number of perm treatments, vigorous crimping at home and even backcombing.

When it comes to our hair, we've all sinned. Look at the worst offences:

  • Combing hair when wet - there goes another split end

  • Drying hair until bone dry

  • Undergoing chemical straightening treatments

  • Overdosing on hairspray

  • Backcombing into oblivion

  • Peroxiding for the sun-bleached look

  • Squeezing on lemon juice while sunbathing

Love your hair

Run your fingers through your hair. If you can! Does it feel extremely dry and brittle? Take a look at your hair. Can you see a few split ends, or is it starting to go frizzy?

Time to take intensive care of your hair. Use a wide toothed comb to brush wet or damp hair - hair is at its weakest when wet. And be careful with hot air - don't blow dry wet hair straightaway. Gently squeeze any excess water with a towel.

Maximise me-time in the bath and use the heat of the bathroom to add intensive treatment to dry locks. Wrap your hair in a towel or pull on a shower cap and leave for five to ten minutes.

Don't use a rubber band to tie your hair back .They can split your hair - and hurt too!
