Most of us understand the damage the sun’s ultra-violet rays can have on our skin, but heat exposure can wreak havoc with hair too. Here’s how to banish weather-beaten locks.

Getting out in the sunshine can make your hair look beautiful – adding natural sun-kissed highlights that are far cheaper than artificial alternatives. But, just as soaking up the rays can leave your skin parched, tender and burned, it can also harm your hair.

UV rays can damage the cuticle on strands of hair – the outer layer of the hair shaft which, when smooth and healthy, lies flat to give hair its natural shine. Left to burn under the sun, this delicate structure can easily deteriorate, resulting in drab, dried out tresses.

Those natural highlights might look pretty, but they're not good for your hair. Just as lightening strands through chemical colouring or bleaching has an impact, so does lightening by basking in the sun – and the result is weakened, brittle locks.

Save your strands!

Unlike sunburn, the danger with 'hairburn' is that you won't feel a thing, as every strand on your head is already dead. So to avoid ruining your crowning glory, protect your hair in the sun, just as you would your skin.

If hats aren't your thing, choose everyday shampoos and conditioners that are enriched with UV filters, to shield against those penetrating UV rays. Check the back of bottles in the Sunsilk range and you'll find these hair-saving ingredients in many of the products.

Style & protect

There's a plethora of UV-fighting styling products on the market too, so whether it's serum, spray or straightening balm you need, find one that helps your hair stay healthy, and keeps it looking gorgeous.

Finally, get into the habit of giving your hair extra special care once in a while. Just like a face mask helps revive your complexion, an intensive hair treatment works wonders to restore sun-parched hair to its former glory. Pick a moisturising treatment and let it soak in to your strands for as long as you can before washing it out.
