Keeping whites bright
Sadly, that favourite white shirt, dress or t-shirt can often become an unattractive grey or yellow after only a few washes – meaning these discoloured garments are often relegated to the bottom of the wardrobe or simply thrown away.
Washing whites with any other colour can discolour the fabric – making clothes look dirty and old. Even if the other colours in the wash are light, the dye can still leak and cause the whites to take on that familiar, and dreaded, grey or yellow hue.
Keep them special
To stop this happening, always segregate your whites into a separate wash. Read the care labels on each garment and wash at the optimum temperature for the fabric.
And always use the correct dose of washing powder – using too little can produce poor cleaning results and risks dirt and hard water building up in the machine. Too much detergent could result in over-foaming and inadequate rinsing.
Don't fade to grey
If your whites do become discoloured, the good news is that you can get them looking crisp and new again. The golden rules are treat early and don't tumble dry or iron stains, as this can make them harder to remove. Don't be tempted to put bathroom bleach on white fabrics, either, as this can actually discolour the fibres further. A good-quality detergent should be all you need.
